BIO: During the 1978 World Cup held in Argentina, Maschio operated as a “journalist”—entering the Chateau Carreras stadium in Córdoba with that designation—though in reality, he was acting as a spy to analyze potential opponents of the Argentine national team.
Below is an excerpt where Maschio recounts this for Diego Borinsky’s “100 Questions” feature in *El Gráfico*.
What role did you play in the ’78 World Cup?.
I was living in Córdoba and scouting the teams playing there that could potentially face Argentina. I did it *pro bono*. I watched the Netherlands, Peru, and Germany. I would enter the Chateau with my press credential, sit at my desk, and write furiously. I would prepare a comprehensive report—covering player movements and set-piece situations—and type it up. The AFA did pay for my flights; I would come to Buenos Aires and hand the reports to Menotti. I was commended for them. Menotti gave great recognition to all of us who helped out in different cities—Griffa, Saporiti, myself…
